Maris Humphreys, 67, of Portsmouth will complete her first marathon this January to raise funds and awareness for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, funds which will benefit patients and their families who suffer from blood-born cancers. Maris is walking in the name of an individual who is currently receiving treatment for leukemia, Heath Twitchell, a member of her Emmanuel Church community. Maris has also lost close family members to leukemia and she walks in their memory. Many of you may be familiar with Team in Training and their signature purple racing shirts.
Maris began walking with a local Team in Training group several years ago and has walked nine half-marathons in the last four years. Her daughters can barely keep-up! This year she is upping the ante physically and financially. In an effort to meet her fundraising goal, Maris is holding a fundraiser at The Newport Elks Lodge on November 17, 2010, 6-9pm. The event will feature a live performance by Newport’s own Chelley, Bill & Dyl, and a Silent Auction full of fantastic gift certificates to local shops and restaurants, services at area salons, works from local artists and gift baskets from local merchants. Refreshments will be provided as well as a cash bar. Admission for this event is $10/individual and $15/couple.
This event is generously sponsored by Jackson O’Neill, LLC Attorneys & Counselors at Law.
