Crimes in Rhode Island are in a range depending on the seriousness of the crime and the punishment associated with it. Below is a list of different classes of crimes, followed by some examples of crimes that are in that classification:
Capital offenses: murder; rape or first degree sexual assault; first degree child molestation; robbery; burglary and arson.
Standard felonies: possession of a controlled substance; embezzlement; breaking and entering; assault with a dangerous weapon; felony assault; driving to endanger.
Misdemeanors: domestic assault; possession of marijuana; simple assault; DUI or driving under the influence; Petty misdemeanors or sometimes called violations: disorderly conduct; possession of alcohol by a minor; possession of a false identification.
There are also a number of different types of proceedings that are held in Rhode Island courts such as bail hearings, probation violation hearings, probable cause hearings, and trials. It is quite a lot to try and understand, especially if you are not familiar with how criminal courts operate.
If you are charged with any of the crimes listed above or any crime for that matter, our advice is that you should always consult with an attorney.
